The Chemical Industries Association (CIA) is delighted to introduce the Sustainable Health Metrics Tool, a practical new resource designed to help companies create healthier and more supportive workplaces. The tool was launched at the CIA’s Health Leadership Workshop event in Leeds, featuring guest speakers and interactive sessions on key workplace health topics including menopause in the workplace, mental health and wellbeing, and developing occupational health performance indicators. Participants explored essential areas such as:
- Line manager needs for supporting employee health and wellbeing
- Processes for selecting and managing third-party occupational health providers
- Examples of leading performance indicators
Latest Health and Safety Executive data, for 2022-2023, show 1.8 million work-related ill health cases, of which 882,000 were due to stress, depression, and anxiety resulting in 7.1 million lost working days. Given the increasing rates of work-related ill health it is more important than ever that industry has the right tools to inform their workplace health and wellbeing programmes.
Stephen Elliott, Chief Executive of CIA, emphasised the importance of the Sustainable Health Metrics Tool encouraging CIA members to make use of the tool, saying:
“In this, the 50th anniversary year of the Health and Safety at Work Act, there is a stronger business case than ever before for good health leadership and this user-friendly tool provides a great starting point for the workplace health and wellbeing journey.”
Created in conjunction with CIA members, the Sustainable Health Metrics tool is predicated on the principles of ‘Plan, Do, Check, Act’. The tool guides the user though a set of both leading and lagging indicators to help score their workplace health and wellbeing programme against a set of criteria and identify areas for improvement. There is also a useful reference library of examples for each set of criteria that can be used to inform an improvement plan.
The outputs from the tool include trend mapping on workplace health and wellbeing performance and an automatically generated ‘Parthenon’ of leading indicators, which provides a visual overview of the three key areas of Health Leadership & Organisation, Health Hazards & Exposure Control and Health Performance & Wellbeing. This allows the user to see at a glance where any gaps exist in their workplace health and wellbeing programme and provides an evidence-based foundation for continual improvement actions to be taken.
The CIA invites members and industry stakeholders to explore this tool and discover the value it can bring to workplace health and wellbeing. For more information and to download the tool, visit the CIA’s Workplace Health & Wellbeing page.
