This region is responsible for 5.6 % of all gross value added by the national chemical industry.

Within Wales the chemical industry is responsible for 2.9% of gross value added from all industries and 14.8% of all manufacturing production.

Exports

This region’s export make up 4.1% of all chemical exports

Chemicals make up 12.4% of all exports from the region and are exported more to the EU than to non-EU countries (61-39).

Over a third (35%) of all exported chemicals from Wales are medicinal and pharmaceutical preparations, and slightly over a fifth (22%) are considered chemical materials and products not elsewhere specified.

Employment

6.8% of all chemical and pharmaceutical employment is in Wales, with 3000 people working in the manufacturing of pharmaceutical preparations, 900 in manufacture of plastics in primary forms, 800 in manufacture of other organic basic chemicals, and 800 in the manufacture of basic pharmaceutical preparations.

Our industry makes up for 6.7 % of all manufacturing employment in the region and we are the fourth largest manufacturing employer in Wales.

The biggest manufacturing employers are food products manufacturing, manufacture of fabricated metal products, and manufacture of basic metal.
