This region is responsible for a quarter (25.3%) of all gross value added by the national chemical industry.

Within the North West the chemical industry is responsible for 4.6% of gross value added from all industries and 28.0% of all manufacturing production.

 

Exports

This region’s export make up 13.4% of all chemical exports

Chemicals are roughly a quarter (24.8%) of all exports from the region and are exported in similar quantities to EU and non-EU countries (58-42).

20% of all exports are medicinal and pharmaceutical products and they are valued around £1.6bn. Another 20% is made up by inorganic chemicals and it valued at £1.5bn.

 

Employment

20.1% of all chemical and pharmaceutical employment is in North West, with 7000 people working in the manufacturing of pharmaceutical preparations, 3000 manufacture plastic in primary forms, and 2500 manufacture other chemical products not elsewhere specified.

Our industry makes up for 8.8 % of all manufacturing employment in the region.

The biggest manufacturing employers are food products manufacturing, fabricated metal products, and manufacture of other transport equipment.
