Businesses by industry sub-sectors

By number of businesses the top three chemical subsectors in the East Midlands are:

  1. Manufacture of perfumes and toilet preparation
  2. Manufacture of plastic in primary forms
  3. Manufacture of pains, varnishes and similar coatings, mastics and sealants.

But in terms of employment, the four chemical subsectors employing more people are:

  1. Manufacture of pharmaceutical preparations
  2. Manufacture of cleaning and polishing preparations
  3. Manufacture of plastic in primary forms
  4. Manufacture of basic pharmaceuticals

GVA

With the Gross Value Added of £1.4bn, the chemical sector is responsible for 6.6% of all manufacturing GVA in the region and roughly 4.0% of all GVA from the national chemical sector.

 

Exports

This region’s exports make up 3.1% of all chemical exports.

Chemicals are 6.6% of all exports from this region and are exported in similar quantities to EU and non-EU countries (59-41)

 

Employment

Roughly 7.9% of all chemical and pharmaceutical employment is in the East Midlands, with 2250 people working in the manufacturing of pharmaceutical preparation, 1500 in the manufacturing of cleaning and polishing preparations, 1250 in manufacturing of plastics in primary forms, and 1250 in basic pharmaceuticals manufacturing.

Our industry makes up for 4.4% of all manufacturing employment in the region.

The biggest manufacturing employers are food products manufacturing, fabricated metal products, and rubber and plastic products manufacturing.

With several STEM focused universities cooperation between academia and industries thrives in this region.
