In 2018 it was clear that the ‘Health’ in Health & Safety was at best non-existent apart from the legislative health surveillance. Futamura decided to start implementing different topics to educate their workforce in Health topics, transforming into Health & Wellbeing. As a result, Futamura now has a Wellbeing programme that deals with different subjects.

This company has implemented Mental health training for all employees, introduced a Menopause policy and have regular health and wellbeing days. At the CIA’s Health Leadership Workshop, taking places in Leeds this November, Mandy will discuss Futamura’s journey to introducing a Health & Wellbeing programme accessible to all employees.

What is the most fundamental aspect of leading mental health and wellbeing programs in the workplace?

Having the sites leaders on board and believing and supporting the programme

How has your membership with CIA helped you on your company’s wellbeing journey?

The CIA’s health toolkit started the journey, showing us where the gaps were. Being part of the care cell meetings, you discover what other organisations have in place which you can learn from. I was also lucky to be involved in peer reviews which also was great at sharing best practises. I have recently been involved in the revamp of the health toolkits which we will be using again to see where we have gaps.

How can companies stay ahead of regulatory changes and the potential impact on the workplace while maintaining a focus on employee wellbeing?

It has to be made part of any organisations plans/objectives and given ownership.

What advice would you give to young professionals entering the chemical industry who are interested in workplace health and wellbeing?

I would encourage you to get involved. The CIA toolkit is a great place to start and there are great companies who can help you on your journey. Being part of a care cell also helps share best practices. The mental health & wellbeing is such an important part of peoples lives and pays dividends when you get it right, it helps with retention and keeping people in work.

Why should people attend this event?

The conference for me always makes me want to do more and this is the platform to here
