Education and Employment

CIA represents member company views on a range of employment issues.

Even in an age of increased technology, the need for people is as strong as ever

CIA has been active in advising members in relation to the Apprenticeship Levy, Gender Pay Gap and General Data Protection Regulations and we continue to advise policy developers about the impact of any additional demands on our industry. Our employment lobbying has seen changes in initial legislator proposals covering a series of different topics, saving significant sums.

CIA manages a national level relationship between our member companies and the trade unions of our sector. This has produced a number of joint positions and together we have lobbied for the sector in the UK and in Europe.

Future skills and the chemical industry

This report makes an important contribution to our understanding of the sector’s current position on skills at a critical time. We look forward to working together to address the challenges outlined in this report.

Workplace Health

CIA and its member companies believe that everyone working on sites with chemicals needs to be active in health (and safety) leadership in order to help prevent incidents and ill health; this includes site operators, health and safety representatives, site management and contractors.

Health and Safety

The approach the sector takes is built around the importance of health and safety. At operational level there has long been a united theme of needing to be safe in a chemical plant. The health of our own workforce of visitors and communities is just as prevalent an issue. Increasingly we have worked with employees to ensure support for their health and in many cases for the health of families too – both physically and mentally. We believe this work helps to build a positive environment that allows people to contribute. Visit our workplace health and wellbeing policy area to find out more.

ChemTalent Network

At the CIA we think is essential that we hear from early careerists to continue improving and shaping the future of our industry. The CIA established a network for all future talent working within chemical and pharmaceutical companies in the UK with the aim to inspire, debate and transform our industry. The network has a seat at the CIA council and various strategy groups giving members the opportunity to be part of the decision making process. Interested? Get to know the ChemTalent Committee and see how you can get involved.

Working for you

Our work at CIA is about promoting the sector as an employer of choice. To do this we:

Share best practice between our members on a whole range of people issues.

Lobby on behalf of our collective membership to policymakers, regulators and decision makers for the tools that support recruitment and retention.

Conduct an industry-wide relationship with the trade unions to spread understanding of the challenges and opportunities that employers and workforces have.
